Hamma '76 gRAD TO BE AWARDED THE COMMUNITY SERVICE APPRECIATION AWARD
Pastor Shafer (Hamma '76, M.Div) has dedicated his life to the service of others and under his leadership, Mt. Olive has also accepted the Students4Students Shelter (formerly known as the Bruin Shelter) at Mt. Olive, the first shelter for homeless college students on the west coast (and the second in the USA). The shelter opened in October 2016 and has attracted media coverage throughout the USA including articles in the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times as well as a feature on National Public Radio (NPR). In 2017, Shafer helped lead the shelter through required City of Santa Monica zoning changes and helped solicit grants for the shelter from the City of Santa Monica and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. A short film about this work will be shared at this event and many community leaders will be present to congratulate Pastor Shafer. This event will take place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 3400 Sawtelle Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90066 on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 10 a.m.
